1/14 Reading Portions: Genesis 15; Matthew 14; Nehemiah 4; Acts 14
Genesis 15:7
And He said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”
DOUBT
YHVH God reminds Abram that it was He who brought the son of Terah out from Ur of the Chaldeans. Yes. Although Abram did the traveling, he would not have left unless the LORD had commanded him; neither would he have arrived, had not the LORD brought him safely into the land. Moreover, YHVH reminded Abram that the land was God’s gift to him. Seven nations possessed this land (Acts 13:19). Even though God had brought him into the land, Abram still had doubts, asking,
“O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it?” Genesis 15:8
God’s answer:
“Bring Me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” Genesis 15:9
The multitude of sacrifices foreshadowed the ultimate Sacrifice in our Lord Jesus Christ since…
it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Hebrews 10:4
As children of God saved by grace, we are much like Abram— though we’ve experienced the calling of God (I brought you out from Ur), we sometimes doubt the promises of God (to give you this land to possess). It’s okay to ask Him, “How am I to know?” In fact, the Lord wants us to ask (Matt 7:7). And God’s answer will be like unto Abram’s. He’ll say to us, “Bring Me Christ’s atoning sacrifice.” And as YHVH God spoke to Abram when “dreadful and great darkness fell upon him” (Gen 15:12-13), God will speak to our hearts and tell us: “Know for certain, that as sure as I’ve sent My only Son to be your atoning Sacrifice, every promise of God in Christ is yours.” The truth of Christ’s cross gives us true perspective. ALWAYS! Christ’s cross illuminates our understanding. Christ’s cross clears away the cobwebs of doubt.
God’s Spirit brought us from the dark,
And called us into Light;
When you’re unsure, go to Christ’s cross
Our course He will make right.
