Psalm 106:2
Who can utter the mighty deeds of the LORD, or declare all His praise?
DECLARE
Who indeed, but the Lord Jesus Christ? As perfect Man, His mouth uttered the eternal truth of heaven without schism, without guile, without corruption, and with all goodness. Every syllable rolling from the tip of our Lord’s precious tongue was perfect praise unto God. He was the one and only beloved Son, and He was well-pleasing to the heavenly Father. ALWAYS! I am humbled to the dust when I think of my praising, preaching, or teaching because of what I know of my Lord and Savior and His sojourn upon earth. And if I didn’t think of it daily, I’m at least reminded once per week when I have to stand behind the pulpit at Calvary Baptist Church, since one of my dear predecessors, Ron Blough, placed a placard on the pulpit that reads:
“No man can bear witness to Christ and himself at the same time. No man can give the impression that he himself is clever and that Christ is mighty to save.”
Indeed. Pastor Blough ministered to CBC from 1989 to 2005 and I’m grateful for that bit of wisdom he left for those who follow Christ as he had. The wonderful truth that lay back of that placard and our verse today is, because Jesus had sufficiently praised, preached, and taught, all His righteousness is placed upon the account of those saved by grace through faith. Because of the corruptions still remaining in our mortal flesh, we don’t always experience the warmth of His covering love nor sufficient grace of His imputed righteousness. When you and I decrease so Christ may increase (John 3:30), that is, when we deny the self, take up His cross as our personal possession, and follow Him (Matt 16:24), the Holy Spirit glorifies Christ Jesus in our souls (John 16:14a), taking what He receives of all the fullness of Christ’s excellent majesty and sufficiency, and shows it to us (John 16:14b). Hallelujah! What a sufficient Savior!
The truth of our sufficient Christ,
Too much for tongue to tell!
His glory— how He paid sin’s price
At Calv’ry, suff’ring hell.
