8/21 Reading Portions: 1 Samuel 13; Romans 11; Jeremiah 50; Psalms 28-29
Psalm 29:1
Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
ASCRIBE
While this should seem an obvious thing, you and I must be commanded to worship God gloriously. We must also be commanded to be obedient to God faithfully. The sweet psalmist of Israel, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, directs even the heavenly beings to ascribe glory and strength to YHVH God. Since you and I have been saved by grace through faith in Christ, we are now heavenly beings, spiritually speaking. Spiritually, we are new creations in Christ (2 Cor 5:17). The corruptions still remaining in our mortal flesh, however, cause us to forget to ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. We need a reminder, and David does so wonderfully in this 29th psalm. Neither will Christ’s voice resound to accomplish its sanctifying work in our lives (Psa 29:5-9). Moreover, we may begin to doubt our own salvation, losing assurance in the depths of our souls, forgetting that the…
LORD sits enthroned as King forever. Psalm 29:10
The Lord Jesus Christ will indeed give strength to His people (Psa 29:11). Therefore, may we, by God’s grace in Christ, worship God faithfully, hear Christ’s voice clearly, and exalt Christ as King victoriously! Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Ascribe to Christ glory and strength,
The glory due His holy name;
We’re heav’nly now by gospel grace,
For which we mustn’t be asham’d.
