Flash forth the lightning and scatter them; send out Your arrows and rout them!
WAR
While David was a warrior king and fought many physical battles with actual enemies of YHVH God’s kingdom, warfare was a prophetic foreshadow of the Lord Jesus Christ. Though He came humbly and in meekness, Jesus was a Man of war in the spiritual sense (Ex 15:3). During His earthly ministry Jesus won battles against the devil in the wilderness of temptation. The Lord won battles against spiritual wickedness and the corruptions of flesh in the valleys of disbelief. Jesus won battles against murderous treachery in the synagogues of conspiracy. The Son of God won battles against misunderstanding in the gardens of ignorance. Finally, Israel’s Messiah won the war over sin and death on the mount of Golgotha. While David received instruction from the Spirit of the LORD for war and battle (Psa 144:1), and the Lord Jesus received instruction as the perfect Son from His Father’s Spirit for His spiritual warfare, we too, are trained in gospel soldiering by the blessed Spirit of Christ, our Rock. The truth of Christ crucified and risen is our weaponry; and in the strength of Christ Jesus and the power of His might (Eph 6:10), we flash forth with the lightning of Christ’s gospel which…
…enlightens the world; and the earth sees and trembles. Psalm 97:4
Christ’s gospel, through His light that shines in us (Matt 5:14-16), will scatter the enemies of our Lord and Savior. You and I are sent out as Christ’s quiver full of arrows to rout temptation, disbelief, treachery, ignorance, and sin and death, because we are God’s children (Psa 127:3-5) —those who have been saved by God’s grace (John 1:12; Eph 2:8-9). We are not veterans yet. We are all still on active duty— and still, in this life’s boot camp. May we, by God’s grace, stay ever planted at the foot of the cross to be good soldiers of Jesus Christ (2 Tim 2:3). Hallelujah! What a Savior!
The war we fight is not yet done;
For some, it’s just begun:
We thank our God for Jesus Christ,
For in our Savior, we have won.
