10/1 Reading Portions: 1 Kings 3; Ephesians 1; Ezekiel 34; Psalms 83-84
1 Kings 3:10
It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this.
ASK
Do you really want to please the Lord? Make Solomon’s petition your own prayer. He prayed for an understanding mind to govern God’s people. Surely, there have been those who have attempted to make this request of God with a thought and desire of getting both riches and honor, as the Lord had given this to Solomon, above the wisdom he had asked for to lead Israel (1 Ki 3:13b); however, Solomon did so innocently, without ulterior motives (1 Ki 3:13a). We can’t fool the Lord.
Solomon’s petition is not a mere historical detail. It is a spiritual principle for you and me to pray. Some may object, declaring they are not leaders. Yet this Old Testament episode is for all and gives us more specific guidelines with regard to the exhortation of James in asking for wisdom (Jas 1:5). Are you a child? Ask for understanding to joyfully obey your parents. Ask for wisdom to discern between good and evil in every decision with regard to your siblings and friends. Are you a parent? Ask for heavenly discernment to properly raise your children in the way they should go. Are you a child of God? Ask the Lord for excellent judgment in order to be the best blessing to fellow believers a sinner saved by grace is able to become. This kind of prayer is special because it also implies our responsibility to act upon God’s supply, as well as faith to trust that God will supply our lack. We need the mind of Christ in every area of our lives while upon this planet. Seek it wholeheartedly and you will not be disappointed. Pray for wisdom and see how God will give you far more abundantly than we can ask or think (Eph 3:20). Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Our God will supply all our need
According to His wealth—
But ask for wisdom, He’ll be pleas’d,
Blessing others, not yourself.
