2 Chronicles 29:34
—for the Levites were more upright in heart than the priests in consecrating themselves.
LEVITES
Being a descendent of Aaron didn’t mean one would become the holiest of men. Neither did enthusiasm toward God’s service. Aaron’s sons were appointed by God because they were to foreshadow the sovereign work of God in bringing forth the Great High Priest, Jesus Christ, born of a virgin (Gal 4:4), and ordained after the order of Melchizedek (Psa 110:4; Heb 6:20).
In this episode, a revival unto the temple’s restoration and a command from the king for the priests to be consecrated for service, taxed the overworked and underrepresented priests both physically and emotionally. The sons of Levi helped, yet they did so with eagerness and with upright hearts, more so than the priests. The priests’ “office” and “position” did nothing to strengthen their faith or provoke their devotion to YHVH God. The chief priests and Pharisees of Christ’s day further exemplified this. They possessed, read, and studied God’s holy Word; yet these religious leaders looked down their nose at two simple Galilean fishermen as “uneducated, common men;” and their hardened hearts were confounded, recognizing that these Galilean fishermen “had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13).
The more time we spend with Jesus― in prayer, in fellowship with other believers, in study and meditation upon God’s holy Word, the more our lives will amaze and astonish the academics and Bible scholars, so-called. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Great and amazing are Your acts,
O God, Almighty Lord;
And just and true are all your ways,
As King, You keep Your Word.
King of nations, who will not fear
And glorify Your name?
Those unholy, who won’t draw near,
Whose end will be their shame.
