Psalm 125:1
Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever!
ABIDING
To trust in the LORD was the antithesis of the kings of Israel, as we read in 2 Kings 15 today. Their kingdoms were as unstable as water because of their idolatry, and they were subject to all kinds of conspiring mischief. To the Jew of old, Mount Zion was a picture of the immovably steadfast. Those who trusted in YHVH God were as firm, fixed, and stable as the mount where David dwelt, and where God’s ark and mercy seat abode. To the Christian, even more so; for Mount Zion is where our precious Lord Jesus was crucified. Now, as Mount Zion represents Christ’s atoning death, our trust in God the Father through Christ our Lord is as fixed and firm as God’s redemptive plan. When we trust our God in Christ, we are not only steadfast and immovable, we represent to the host of heaven, and to the earth below, the very picture of God’s grace, mercy, and love; we represent the unshakable righteousness of Christ, in all His obedient humility to serve the heavenly Father, and His passion to ever please Him. The weakness of our flesh will cause us to fail at times; and that failure will tempt us to waver in faith and to vacillate in trust. We must not. We must abide. We must lift up our eyes to Christ, “enthroned in the heavens” (Psa 123:1), because of His exalted work on the cross; because He is risen forevermore; because He has ascended in glory unimaginable; and because He is coming again. With Christ’s cross at the center of our lives, our God and Savior…
…surrounds His people, from this time forth and forevermore. Psalm 125:2
Moreover, “the scepter of wickedness shall not rest on the” promises of Christ to those saved by His grace through faith (Psalm 125:3). Hallelujah! What a Savior!
They in the Lord that firmly trust
Shall be like Sion hill,
Which at no time can be remov’d,
But standeth ever still.
Scottish Psalter, 1650
