8/15 Reading Portions: 1 Samuel 5-6; Romans 5; Jeremiah 43; Psalm 19
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14
MEDITATION
This entire psalm is an amazing passage of Scripture. It begins with the glory of God declared in the heavens and ends with the desire of a soul to bring true glory to God when hypocrisy is the best our fallen flesh can muster. This last statement of the psalm is a blessed, honest, transparent request. We remember Christ’s indictment of the religious hypocrites of His day. Quoting YHVH God through the prophet Isaiah, Jesus said,
“‘This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me’” Matthew 15:8
Our enthroned Lord Jesus is almighty God. He sees all. He knows all. We cannot fool Him. This verse pinpoints our difficulty. We may praise God in Christ with our mouths, but if the meditation of our hearts is elsewhere, it is unacceptable. The flesh is fickle and a thousand temptations will distract us. The cry of our heart must be to Christ. He alone is our Rock and Redeemer. We must, through the Holy Spirit, seek empowerment so that our meditations are true and accurately expressed by the words of our mouths. We can’t be phony with our all-seeing, all-knowing King of kings. Therefore, this very open, honest, and transparent prayer is one of the truest and purest requests we can make of Him:
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight…”
David was inspired of the Holy Spirit to pen this majestic request. Thus, these words are God’s desire for us. YHVH God not only wanted David to make this plea to King Jesus, but He also desired this supplication of all His noble subjects. May this be our earnest petition today to our Lord Jesus, our Rock, our Redeemer!
My flesh will utter words untrue,
My heart reflections stray;
Yet You’re my Rock, my steadfast Lord,
Who keeps me on the narrow way.
