PEERLESS
There is none like You, O LORD; You are great, and Your name is great in might. Jeremiah 10:6
This chapter is rather infamous among Christians who hate Christmas, pointing to verse 3 and 4 as “proof” that the Christmas tree is pagan. Having a view much like the 17th century Puritans, I’m not a huge fan of Christmas, but talk about prying a passage from its context, that goes beyond the hermeneutical pale. As I’ve taught for more than a quarter century, it’s not about a Christmas tree, it’s about idol-a-tree. As you know, idolatry is forbidden in the second commandment. It is the chief of sins. Pride is merely self-idolatry; adultery is perverse idolatry; and so on. Yet in the midst of insidious idolatry (Jer 10:3-4, 8-10), our Lord Jesus Christ stands out as the Lily among the thorns. He is the bright Morning Star who shines in the darkest sky before dawn. Truly, there is none like Him. Jesus is unique; and as a Man, without peer in holiness and righteousness. While Islam declares, “Alahu akbar,” meaning, “God is greater,” making their statement a comparative proposition, the Bible’s proclamation of Yehovah God is absolute, for our God is absolute and unchanging in His nature and character. Likewise, it is true of the Lord Jesus Christ as eternal God, absolute and unchanging in His deity (Heb 13:8). The name of the Lord Jesus is great in might because it is powerful enough to save the most wretched of idolaters, even in the midst of their idolatry. It is as Peter declared, “This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:11-12). Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Lord Jesus, there is none like You,
Most glorious in Your ways;
Though idols wicked men pursue,
Your mighty name yet saves.
