Genesis 7:10-12
And after seven days the waters of the flood came upon the earth. In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened. And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
JUDGMENT
There are at least five truths we can glean from these three verses regarding the beginning of God’s judgment upon sin for the believer in Christ. It is written,
For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 1 Peter 4:17
First, it is sure to come, just as YHVH God said that it would, as it is written,
And after seven days the waters of the flood came upon the earth.
After the building of the ark was complete, God told Noah that it was time to leave his home on earth, pack up his family and his belongings, and move into to the ark, bringing the animals with him (Gen 7:4, 9).
Second, God’s judgment will come at a specific time ordained by Him, as it is written,
In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month,
Noah was 600 years old when the floodwaters came, and though it tarries, it will come. Jesus didn’t suffer on that tree and die a wretched death for us to continue to sin. The flood reflects the precious blood that cleanses us from sin.
Third, God’s judgment upon sin will shake up and break up everything we knew of this world and its worldliness.
on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth,
The great deluge of Noah’s day was not simply a natural event. It was a miraculous work of God, bringing up the ground waters from below, pointing to the Christ’s cross, the ultimate supernatural work of God to resolve sinful man’s plight.
Fourth, God’s judgment upon sin will bring insights into Christ’s eternal kingdom, as it is written,
and the windows of the heavens were opened.
When we look to Christ crucified (1 Cor 2:2), and see what it cost the Triune God to bring us salvation, the reconcile ourselves to Him in holiness, we will see sin for what it is, we will exalt Christ for who He is and what He has done, we will glorify the Father for who He is and what He has done, and we lean upon the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit to keep us from sin.
Fifth, God’s judgment upon sin in the Christian’s life is set for a limited time, as it is written,
And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
You and I only have so much time on this planet before our Lord Messiah either comes again or takes us home before His return. The anointed rain of the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and assist us to glorify our Lord and King. You and I only have so many days in this life to exalt Christ for the benefit of others, a most Christ-like thing indeed, let us make the most of our time on the planet for God’s glory, as it is written:
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16
And again,
Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14
Hallelujah! What a Savior!
