The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.
SPARROWS
We do not know much about these sons of Aram; yet we can at least say something each one of them. Uz, whose name in Hebrew, עוּץ (ootz), means “consultation.” While Abraham’s brother, Nahor, also had a son with the same name, “Huz” (Gen 22:21), the “land of Uz” is mentioned as existing in Edom, southeast of the Dead Sea (Lam 4:21), quite possibly near the Arabian Peninsula (Job 1:1). Regarding the land of Uz, whenever we find ourselves amid worldliness (Edom), or when trials, testing, and temptations are upon us, we need to seek consultation from our Lord Jesus, as it is written:
The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations. Psalm 33:11
Hul’s name is only mentioned here and in 1 Chronicles 1:17. His name in Hebrew, חוּל (chool), means “circle.” It comes from a Hebrew root that means “twisted” or “shapen,” as it is written,
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Psalm 51:5, KJV
We need to be reminded often of our depravity and propensity toward sin so we may surrender to Christ ever and always.
Mash is called Meshech in 1 Chronicles 1:17. While we do not know what Mash means, Meshech in Hebrew, מֶשֶׁךְ (ME-shekh), means “sowing” or “precious possession.” Mash (and Meshech) is a reminder that Jesus is our precious possession and we will reap what we sow (Gal 6:8).
Gether is only mentioned here and in 1 Chronicles 1:17. We do not know what his name means, but his name reminds us that no one made in the image and after the likeness of God is insignificant. As obscure as the name Gether may be, whether saved or not, as God’s eye is upon the sparrows (Matt 10:29), His eye is certainly upon you and me (Matt 10:31).
