“That path no bird of prey knows, and the falcon’s eye has not seen it.”
HIDDEN
Alaska has a great deal of wildlife. One of the most distinctive is the American bald eagle. Their eyes are so sharp, it is a wonder to witness. They circle above the Ninilchik River in May when the king salmon are running. If you’re blessed to see it, one will swoop down from great heights, seeing a salmon swimming just below the water’s surface, grab the fish in its talons, and take off. Amazing! Yet despite its keen vision, it cannot see the mouse or mole in its hole beneath the earth. Neither can it see the halibut ten fathoms below the water’s surface in the Cook Inlet. The wisdom of God and the ways of grace in Christ are among those things that the sharpest eye cannot perceive, neither the keenest vision spot from afar. You and I have no doubt witnessed men in our Christian sojourn who have memorized Scripture, dripping from their lips like warm butter on a hot roll; men who possessed knees like camels from praying so fervently; men who were stalwart examples of faith for Christ; nevertheless, we should understand that they could only ascend that hill by God’s grace, and still, the best of their knowledge in the Lord, their best service to the Lord, and their best worship before the Lord could never unlock the hidden treasures which belong eternally to God alone. Truths such as reconciling the sovereignty of God and the responsibility of man; the mercy of God and the justice of God; the tri-unity of God in three persons; etc. By understanding the illustration of the lesser, that there is a path unseen by the falcon or bird of prey, helps us to believe by faith in the greater, and trust God in Christ for the hidden treasures yet unknown to us, or still beyond our comprehension. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
The eagle with its brilliant sight
Can see things from afar;
Yet there are things they still can’t see,
As hidden treasures are.
