Genesis 1:6-8
And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
SKY
Now, I’ve preached this for over 25 years so, for some of you, this may be a little redundant, from the Department of Redundancy Dept. Apologies. Nevertheless, it won’t be the last time you read it or hear it. Ever wonder why Mondays seemed to be a drag? At least when you were unsaved, they were. After the Lord Jesus saved you, they were more tolerable; and for many of us, they were an outright joy in serving our Master. Of the six days of creation, the second day is the only day that God doesn’t say that it “was good.” The first, third, fourth, and fifth days were good (Gen 1:4, 12, 21, 25). On the sixth day, after creating mankind in His own image and after His likeness (Gen 1:26-27), our triune God said that “it was very good” (Gen 1:31). Now, mind you, the lack of God’s commentary on the second day didn’t mean that it wasn’t good. The expanse called “heaven” emerging between the waters, is what we call “sky;” and it declares God’s glory (Psa 19:1). What is God prophetically saying to us here? I believe this creation event on the second day foreshadows man’s first day out of the garden after the fall, one week later (which we’ll look at when we get to Genesis 3). The flowing waters of Christ’s gospel in His eternal abode (above the expanse) are separated from the flowing waters of the promise and blessings of Christ’s gospel on the earth below (under the expanse). How are they separated? By God’s glory, course—displayed by the heavens in between the two realities. The gospel in the presence of God Almighty in the third heaven is perfect, complete, and without sin or schism. The gospel below is presented to fallen man through Christ’s promise…
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23
It is only in, by, and through Jesus Christ and His eternal gospel that we may glorify God, and pass through, as it were, to be raised up with Christ and seated with Christ in heavenly places in Christ (Eph 2:6). Hallelujah! What a Savior!
