STRICKEN
“I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men,” 2 Samuel 7:14
This expression of the promise to David concerning Solomon foreshadows the cruel and savage beatings the Lord Jesus would undergo on His way to the cross. It also foreshadows the grace of God through Jesus Christ applied to the lives of sinful men. Yehovah God lavished wisdom and wealth upon Solomon, being a heavenly Father to Solomon, and Solomon to God, as a beloved son. Solomon, in his life, parted from the ways of the LORD, multiplying wives to himself (Deut 17:17); his 700 wives and 300 concubines turned away his heart after other gods (1 Ki 11:3-4). Although Solomon committed iniquity in that and other things, he was not chastened with the rod of men, nor was he disciplined with the stripes of the sons of men. We have been treated likewise. Christ Jesus has lavished us with grace upon grace, and has been to us an “everlasting Father” (Isa 9:6). Yet, the Lord Jesus, committing not a single iniquity, was reproved, disciplined, and “stricken for the transgression of [God’s] people” (Isa 53:8). The rod of men was delivered upon our Lord with both anger and delight, with both hatred and indifference, and with both malice and shamelessness, until the Son of Man was unrecognizable as a human being:
As many were astonished at You— His appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and His form beyond that of the children of mankind—Isaiah 52:14
Therefore, when the Lord Jesus was at His weakest point physically, He endured God’s infinite and eternal wrath, paying a debt He did not owe, for a debt we owe and cannot possibly pay, as it is written,
For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21
Hallelujah! What a Savior!
As many were amaz ‘d at You—
So marr’d they His features;
His form did not resemble man
Nor sons of men as creatures.
