7/2 Reading Portions: Joshua 4; Psalms 129-131; Isaiah 64; Matthew 12
Psalm 131:2
But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me. ESV
Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child. KJV
WEANED
In this song of ascent, David hits upon a most wonderful truth in the life of the Christian. Surely, this psalm is messianic and prophetic of the Lord Jesus Christ, who said of Himself in yesterday’s reading,
“I am gentle and lowly in heart.” Matthew 11:29
Yet as Christ has redeemed us to conform us to His image (Rom 8:29), He does so through the Holy Spirit, who conforms our behavior to reflect the calmed and quieted soul that David pens of his own experience; and of which our Master lived during His earthly ministry. In the infancy of our Christian life, we were nursing babes. Nevertheless, the calm and quiet soul is found in the activity of the weaned child. We are no longer docile or dormant; though we are not yet adults, spiritually speaking. Everything we do is by oversight, permission, and approval of our heavenly Father, also by our elder Brother, the Lord Jesus Christ, as well as by our indwelling Comforter, the Holy Spirit. Our hearts must not be “lifted up;” nor our eyes “raised too high;” (Psa 131:1a) to think we’d ever achieve sinless perfection as if to be exactly like Christ while we live on this broken earth. Nevertheless, as weaned souls, we are able to reach for food at the Master’s table; dine with Him and feast upon the food He provides; compose ourselves (calmed) at His banquet, as those fit to be there; and rest with eternal trust in Christ (quieted) because our God shall supply all our needs according to His riches in glory (Phil 4:19). Indeed, Christ is our hope…
from this time forth and forever. Psalm 131:3
The soul in Christ is quieted
When once we have been weaned;
We calm our souls to trust our Lord
As children of the King.
