The Merciful Warning of God through Amos
11/16 Reading Portions: 1 Chronicles 7-8; Hebrews 11; Amos 5; Luke 1:1-38
Listen to the audio devotional above, and/or read the written devotional below.
“Even though you offer Me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened animals, I will not look upon them.” Amos 5:22
The Northern Kingdom of Israel was near the end of the line. Since her split from the Southern Kingdom of Judah, not a single king lived righteously before YHVH God. Despite the LORD’s gracious prosperity toward them, the people worshiped Baal, in the groves (Asherah), and on the high places. During all this, they still held to a form of Mosaic worship through their animal sacrifices in burnt offerings and peace offerings, as well as grain offerings. They may have even offered their worship in the name of YHVH, while doing so before the golden calves in Bethel and Dan. Their souls were not seeking the LORD (Amos 5:4, 6). Their hearts sought evil and not good (Amos 5:14) since they loved evil and hated good (Amos 5:15). Forms of external worship apart from a soul hungering and thirsting to see Christ, to seek good to please Him, and to hate evil and love good to honor Him, is unacceptable worship before God (I will not accept them) and is outright ignored by Him (I will not look upon them). Moreover, their hymns of praise and thanksgiving were irritating to YHVH God (Amos 5:23). Oh, but thank God for His tender mercy and His amazing grace! He sent Amos to alert them to their depraved condition, just as He sent Christ to save us and sent the Holy Spirit to sanctify you and me, by God’s grace. Let us not think that once we’ve been saved, we have never departed from true, spiritual worship at times. We are just as prone to offering Christ external forms of worship while our minds wander, and our hearts pursue worldly lusts and the pride of life. Through Amos, God said to Israel,
“Seek Me and live; but do not seek Bethel…” Amos 5:4-5
May the word of Christ through Amos be an encouraging and empowering truth for us; that by its truth, we may surrender to Christ alone, always in all ways.
Our offerings of worship, if
Only external are,
Do grieve our Lord through lying lips
With hearts cast off and far.
