Psalm 119:1
“Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD!”
ZEAL
Mr. Spurgeon called this psalm “The Golden Alphabet.” It is an acrostic of the Hebrew aleph-beyt, with eight verses of every one of the twenty-two Hebrew letters in alphabetical order. Its entirety extols God’s Word because every verse expresses some aspect of His precepts. The psalmist who wrote this song penned each verse with a supernatural zeal, whose soul was “consumed with longing for [God’s] rules at all times” (Psa 119:20), for said he,
My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget your words. Psalm 119:139
Surely, the verses of this psalm can only truly be fulfilled by the Lord Jesus Christ; while many other verses in its text are prayers of saints uttered by those of Old Testament times who longed for the appearing of their Messiah, as well as prayers of New Testament children of God who have been saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus. Because Jesus is the only Man who ever kept God’s law in thought, word, and deed, blameless before God in all His ways, our opening verse in Psalm 119 is certainly about our precious Lord. Nevertheless, because we are in Christ by saving grace, you and I are blameless because of Him. Jesus is our “blameless Way” since He is…
“…the Way, and the Truth, and the Life.” John 14:6
Jesus walked in the law of the LORD perfectly, and therefore, we walk in the law of the LORD since we walk in Christ. This is why the law has not been completely obliterated. It has been abolished as a requirement for sinful man’s approach and access to God; however, it is only perfectly fulfilled in Christ. The law’s eternal existence must always be before our eyes, reminding us how we must lean upon Christ’s everlasting arms every moment. We are blessed because we keep Christ’s testimony and seek Him with our whole heart (Psa 119:2). Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Blessed are we when blameless Christ
Is both our Way and walk;
For, yes, His grace transforms our lives,
A truth that’s more than talk.
