Romans 8:18
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
GLORY
Earlier in his third missionary journey, Paul had written to the Corinthians a similar truth:
For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 2 Corinthians 4:17, (see the devotional written 3/5/23)
Less than a year afterward, from Corinth, the apostle wrote to the Christian believers in Rome the verse. First, we should consider what that glory is that will be revealed to us. Why, it is none other than the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. This glory is the unspeakable, unimaginable, immeasurable, and unapproachable glory of the incarnate, crucified, risen, and ascended Treasure of heaven, the Adonai Jesus Messiah. This is the same glory that Moses could not see in its full strength:
“But,” He said, “you cannot see My face, for man shall not see Me and live.” And the LORD said, “Behold, there is a place by Me where you shall stand on the rock, and while My glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with My hand until I have passed by. Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back, but My face shall not be seen.” Exodus 33:20-23
It is this glory of Christ that must be concealed until we have been changed from mortal to immortal and from corruptible to incorruptible (1 Cor 15:51-54, KJV). It is this glory of Jesus that must be hidden until you and I have a transformed glory that can behold His glory (1 Jn 3:2). It is this glory that will, by God’s merciful grace, be veiled in large part to the reprobate, unbelieving rejecter of Christ in the Day of Judgment; yet it will be the fullness of this very glory of Christ that will torment and implode1 their sinful souls in eternal and infinite condemnation. Until then, all that we suffer here on this mortal coil strengthens our characters to make us more like Christ now (Rom 8:28-29), so that we may appreciate more greatly and more wonderfully that revealed glory of Christ. We do not yet possess pleasures forevermore in Christ’s presence (Psa 16:11); it is only a glimpse now, because His glory will shine so brightly that it can only be enjoyed by immortal eyes, eyes that once were eyes of faith and hope. Then, in that Day, we will know as we’ve been known (1 Cor 13:12); and the things of earth will dim and lose their value. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
The “implosion” of the lost soul in the Day of Condemnation is expressed in the message, “God’s Just Judgment,” on SermonAudio.com, delivered by Jon Cardwell on July 6, 2025 at Calvary Baptist Church in Ninilchik, Alaska. You can listen to or download the message by clicking here.
