Genesis 2:18-20
Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
LONGING
Still on the sixth day of creation, YHVH God created the woman (Gen 1:27-28). Beginning in verse 18 of the second chapter, He gives us the details of her creation. God begins with two declarations: first, man’s solitude was not good because having been created in the image and after the likeness of the pre-incarnate Lord Jesus, mankind was meant for fellowship; and second, this helper would be fit or meet (KJV) for the man. In other words, she would be an appropriate counterpart to the man.
Yet notice what YHVH God does after His two-fold declaration. He forms animals from the dust of the ground like those He had already created earlier in the day and brings them to Adam for naming. He creates in the man a longing, an anticipation, and an expectation for this helper. For after naming the animals, among them there was not found a helper fit for him. This is a prophetic foreshadow of what He ultimately does for every soul Christ redeems—the Lord Jesus creates in us a longing for Him (Psa 51:10-11). It is written:
for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. Philippians 2:13
And again:
We love because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19
Ours love to God is always a response to His love for us. Why?
because God is love. 1 John 4:8
Finally, while the birds of the air were created on the fifth day and the beasts of the field were created earlier on the sixth day prior to YHVH God forming the man from the dust of the ground, God now forms individual animals, beasts and birds, from the same ground from which Adam was formed to bring them to Adam so he could name them. In this way, Satan could not ever say to Adam, “You know, nothing exploded to form the first cell and all the animals in the world are here because of millions of years of evolution.” Adam could refute it immediately and say, “No, I watched God make them, so I named them.” Hallelujah! What a Savior!
