11/14 Reading Portions: 1 Chronicles 3-4; Hebrews 9; Amos 3; Psalm 146-147
Psalm 146:3
Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
TRUST
The best of men, at best, are only men. We are fallen, corrupt, and sinful descendants of Adam. Placing our trust in mere men because of their power, position, or prominence is foolish at best, and fatal at worst. Pastors, preachers, potentates, earthly princes, and pillars of society will let you down because none of them have saved you, nor can they save. There is only one Man who can be trusted implicitly in every situation and circumstance, for every moment of every hour of every day— the only One wherein salvation may be found— Jesus Christ, the eternally Righteous One; the only Mediator between God and men (1 Tim 2:5).
Our verse of Scripture today is a wonderful commandment. It is also a warning. Why? Because our flesh has a tendency toward placing our trust anywhere other than Jesus Christ. The corruptions remaining in our mortal flesh hates the gospel (Gal 5:17). We must ever and always be reminded to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ alone. Until the Lord Jesus returns, and this corruptible mortal puts on incorruptible immortality (1 Cor 15:53-54), we can never be reminded enough and encouraged enough with this truth. Adam, before the fall, was perfect and holy; nevertheless, he did not trust in the LORD. How much more should we embrace the reminder since we are not yet perfect. Trust in only One. Trust in Christ Jesus alone— the Lord God, who has condescended to be our Redeemer, Brother, and Friend.
Trust in Jesus Christ, our Savior,
For men will let you down;
In Christ alone does hope endure,
In Him, our strength abounds.
He gives life, ‘tis Christ alone,
He’ll change us in the end—
When He returns and brings us home:
On this, we can depend.
