Psalm 110:5
The Lord is at Your right hand; He will shatter kings on the day of His wrath.
GRACIOUS
The same Lord and Savior who is love and mercy is also wrath and vengeance. God is immutable in His attributes and changes not (Mal 3:6). He does not turn off one attribute to exercise another. In the Day of Christ’s return, kings who have not humbled themselves with a broken heart and contrite spirit, will be shattered of soul, and their kingdoms will be ripped from them. The Lord Jesus will be…
…revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8
Anyone who has presumed to be king of their own lives, who has not bowed to the King of kings, will receive His wrath. Their faces will go pale with thoughts of alarm, their limbs will give way, and their knees will knock together (Dan 5:6), just as King Belshazzar’s did when he saw the writing upon the wall (Dan 5:5). The gospel-indifferent Christ-rejecters will be struck by the sword from the mouth of the eternal King of kings (Rev 19:15), who “is called Faithful and True” (Rev 19:11), and will be devoured by a fire that is 102 times greater than we can imagine, just as King Ahaziah’s two captains and companies of fifty each were consumed by the fire of heaven in Elijah’s day (2 Ki 1:10, 12). Yet we who have been graced by mercy and salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, like Ahaziah’s third captain, who entreated Elijah for mercy and was spared (2 Ki 1:13-15), you and…
…I will give thanks to the LORD with [a] whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. Psalm 111:1
The consuming fire of Christ’s wrath is what we deserve, because of the sins we’ve committed against a holy God; instead, however, we’ve received mercy and life because of God’s amazing grace through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Hallelujah! What a gracious Savior!
Christ, our Lord, at God’s right hand,
Yes, will surely one day come;
Yet in that Day, those who stand
Are those, who by faith, succumb.
