11/25 Reading Portions: 1 Chronicles 21; 1 Peter 2; Jonah 4; Luke 9
1 Peter 2:22-23
He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in His mouth. When He was reviled, He did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but continued entrusting Himself to Him who judges justly.
SHAME
Sometimes, portions of Scripture bring tears to my eyes. Tears of shame. I realize how often I take for granted the excellencies of the work of Christ to save my soul. The Treasure of heaven and earth, Jesus Christ, became a perfect Man to live the life you and I cannot possibly live (He committed no sin). While on earth, Jesus spoke the most profound truth human ear has ever heard (neither was deceit found in His mouth). Though He was beaten, blasphemed, and falsely accused, Jesus did not revile in return. When Jesus suffered on the cross, He did not threaten, but instead, He blessed, saying,
“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34
Jesus bore our iniquities and sins as if they were His own, never once denying them, but continued entrusting Himself to Him who judges justly. For the glory and honor it would bring His heavenly Father, and for the blessing of salvation graciously bestowed upon His people, Jesus endured God’s infinite wrath and the ridicule and shame wrongly hurled upon Him by wicked souls. By giving Himself, Jesus has given more than any man, and more than all men put together, for your personal benefit and mine. Nevertheless, I sometimes seem to forget; I sometimes fail to give Jesus and His blessed sacrifice the highest place in my heart and the most distinguished honor in my thoughts. He deserves far more than the meager thanksgiving I do offer. Yet when I have reached my deepest despair, Christ whispers in my spiritual ear, “My suffering also atones for your greatest lack; My grace is sufficient for thee.” In Christ Jesus, you and I are reviled no more. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Lord Jesus, perfect, holy Man,
Suffer’d beyond all men;
Fulfilling God the Father’s plan
To make us born again.
