Psalm 37:7
Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!
STILL
The first part of this verse says, “Rest in the LORD” (KJV); or literally, “Be silent unto YHVH.” A figurative interpretation may be implied: “Be silent as the LORD leads.” This was a key characteristic of our Lord Jesus Messiah. As perfect and sinless Man, He had every right to be as free as He desired in His dealings and His doings. Nevertheless, Jesus Christ was absolutely and uncompromisingly submissive to His heavenly Father’s perfect will and good pleasure. He never rushed ahead of the Father’s perfect timing, neither did He lag in a single moment of the Father’s glorious plans. Moreover, He did so silently. He had perfect trust in the Father since He committed His ways to the LORD (Psa 37:5); therefore, He never had to doubt the Father’s love in a single situation or circumstance— even when He agonized in prayer before He faced God’s holy wrath for sins He did not commit (Psa 37:28). Christ’s silence before YHVH allowed Him to hear the blessed truths of the law of His God; and being instilled with the law in His heart, He never failed, faltered, or fumbled in a single step (Psa 37:31). As He delighted in the law of His God, the more He delighted in the Father Himself; and the more He delighted in His Father, the more He desired His Father’s joy, good pleasure, and ultimate glory (Psa 37:4). Jesus never had to fret over the one who… carries out evil devices because He was still before the LORD. He knew that, by God’s grace, many evildoers would find salvation in the LORD and deliverance from their sins (Psa 37:39-40); and likewise, He knew transgressors who did not trust in God would pay for their sins committed against God (Psa 37:38). Hallelujah! What a Savior! May we, by God’s grace, endeavor always to be as Jesus Messiah and be still before the LORD.
Be still before the LORD and wait
On what the LORD God pleases,
So by Him our path is made straight,
As to exalt Lord Jesus.
