And I raised up some of your sons for prophets, and some of your young men for Nazirites. Is it not indeed so, O people of Israel?” declares the LORD. Amos 2:11
When Jesus read this verse as sinless, perfect Man, He understood this declaration of His heavenly Father was made based upon who He was as the supreme Prophet of whom Moses spoke (Deut 18:15-19), as well as the ultimate Nazarite also mentioned in the Law (Num 6:1-21). Had Jesus not come every prophet would have been raised by YHVH God in vain, for they all testified of Jesus Christ (Psa 40:7-8; John 5:39). Likewise, every Nazarite making his vow, from Samson to John the Baptist, were only foreshadows of the LORD’s Messiah to come. As the anointed Prophet to come, Jesus not only spoke the Word of God purely (as no other prophet could) and fulfilled God’s Word surely (as no other prophet would even dare), but He also imparted God’s Word into the hearts of His people after He was crucified, risen, and ascended into heaven (as no other prophet was even capable). As the Nazarite foretold, Jesus needed not to declare an oath or impose a vow upon Himself while walking upon the planet. As He fulfilled God’s Word with every thought, spoken word, and righteous deed, a vow was unnecessary. His Father had spoken the oath, and swore by Himself (Gen 22:16; Heb 6:13-14), so that the Lord Jesus did not have to. Yet, on the night He was betrayed, the Lord declared His Nazarite vow as the oath He would keep until He fulfilled His return, not partaking of the fruit of the vine until He drank it new with His disciples in His Father’s kingdom (Matt 26:29). YHVH God continues to raise prophets and Nazarites, spiritually speaking, as witnesses to Christ’s gospel. As those before Christ came were foreshadows; you and I, since He’s come, are afterglows. Our redeemed lives prophesy Christ’s gospel when we follow Him in baptism (Rom 6:4). We uphold His vow each time we proclaim His death until He comes (1 Cor 11:26). Hallelujah! What a Savior!
The prophets life, the Naz’rite’s vow,
Foreshadow God’s own Son;
Christ’s truth is written on us now
And seal’d until He comes.
