COMPLETE
Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, You know it altogether. Psalm 139:4
In The Treasury of David, Mr. Spurgeon calls this psalm: “One of the most notable of the sacred hymns. It sings the omniscience and omnipresence of God…” Sometimes, we wretched humans, though we are saved by God’s grace, and having the best intentions an erroneous premise can muster, we so miserably rest upon ridiculous presumptions and draw the most insidious conclusions. Sometimes, we may emphasize one of God’s attributes to the detriment of several others. Many have emphasized God’s love to a place of perversion, suggesting that in order to give you and me a freewill choice in salvation, God must “look down the corridors of time” from eternity to see who will say ‘yes’ to His offer of grace, and then He chooses such to be His saved elect. How horrible! This implies that the all-knowing One must learn something; that perfect One is imperfect; that the self-sufficient One has a need. My friends, this cannot be. We serve a complete Creator, for the Almighty is absolute in His being and unchangeable in His ways. In today’s verse, we consider the all-knowing trait of the everywhere-present God. Is it any wonder at all that fallen men would so easily turn to worshiping idols? If in their hearts and imaginations the God of heaven and earth has attributes like unto fallen men, why serve the Holy One when a hellish substitute not only serves their sin, but in the idol’s silence, will not convict a man’s conscience? You and I, however, serve a omniscient God, a complete Lord, and a sufficient and satisfying Savior. Because He is complete and unwavering in all His divine attributes, you and I, redeemed by His amazing grace, are in the eternal scheme of things, complete in Christ Jesus as well. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
E’en in my tongue, before I speak,
Yes, Lord, You know each word;
The thought of You being incomplete,
O, Lord, is just absurd.
