1 Corinthians 15:53, KJV
For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
INCORRUPTIBLE
The sinless perfection of God’s people during our sojourn on this planet was not the purpose of salvation by the gospel. Our verse today proves it. The apostle refers to himself as mortal and corruptible. The context of the incorruption and immortality to which he speaks refers to the resurrection to come at the return of Jesus Christ. Yes, one day, “we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye” (1 Cor 15:52), but until then we still struggle. We are engaged in constant warfare with the corrupt flesh remaining in our mortal bodies, as the fifth chapter of Galatians reminds us (Gal 5:17). Of this, however, we should not despair. It is by God’s great design. Because we have not arrived, or as Paul says to the Philippians, “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect” (Phil 3:12), we must trust in Jesus and lean upon His grace. When we trust upon Christ and lean upon His grace moment by moment while we live upon this planet, His saving grace then becomes sanctifying grace— we actually become holier in our personal conduct and more righteous in our Christian behavior— not perfect, as Paul says again to the Philippians, yet we…
…press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:12
While we dwell upon the earth, our life is like a vapor, a mist in the eternal scheme of things. It appears for a little time and then vanishes. One day, the Lord will come or call us home. One day will come soon enough. When it does, we will be immortal and incorruptible. Until then, because we have been saved by God’s grace, that grace must produce continued trust and submission to the will of God unto obedience, which is infinitely pleasing to God. Why? Because it glorifies the heavenly Father through exaltation of His Son, Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
One day will come, though now not here,
We’ll dwell in perfect praise;
Yet, while on earth, it must be clear,
We trust Christ’s grace always.
