This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 1 Corinthians 4:1
MYSTERIES
The apostle had been correcting the sinful actions and attitudes of the believers in Corinth for three chapters, and as he continued sailing through their error on the same tack, he told the leaders, readers, and hearers of this letter how he and his missionary team should be regarded —as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.
Paul’s use of, “us,” carries with it a broader application since it relates to Bible teachers, preachers, and pastors today. As a pastor and preacher, I am a servant of Christ and steward of the mysteries of God. Yet are not all Christians called of God as Christ’s servants and stewards of God’s mysteries? This calling is both our privilege and responsibility. As servants, literally “oarsmen” from the original Greek, we are to row the boat of Christ’s kingdom to the beat of His drum, paddling wherever He lists the rudder to steer the ship. We cannot truly serve others unless it comes from a heart, mind, and strength surrendered to Christ Jesus. As stewards, literally “managers of the house” from the Greek, we have been entrusted by Christ to oversee the eternal mysteries of His kingdom. The truth of Christ’s gospel are mysteries because they were shut up in the Old Testament, but now revealed in, by, and through Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of Scripture. Moreover, they are mysteries because they are also hidden from the godless, unbelieving world (1 Cor 2:14). These mysteries of Christ’s kingdom are our eternal treasure and responsibility until He returns. Such manifold mysteries include Christ’s eternal presence and promises; the Spirit’s teaching, guidance, and empowerment; and the Father’s love and protection during our earthly sojourn. Oh, what majesty God has bestowed upon us by His amazing grace— to be servants and stewards in Christ’s kingdom! Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Our ministry to serve the Lord
Is blessed and profound;
It’s lavish’d on us through God’s Word
By Christ’s true gospel sound.
