6/5 Reading Portions: Deuteronomy 9; Psalms 92-93; Isaiah 37; Revelation 7
Deuteronomy 9:6
“Know, therefore, that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stubborn people.”
IMPUTATION
Since Adam’s disobedience, until the return of the Lord Jesus Christ, there has not been nor will be any descendant of fallen Adam who will ever be saved apart from God’s grace in Christ. All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags, polluted garments, and unclean things, says YHVH God through the prophet (Isa 64:6). Every good news promise and every gospel blessing comes by the accompanying truth of Christ’s imputed righteousness. Righteousness that is pure, faithful, unadulterated, and humble is the only path to heaven and the only access to God’s glorious presence. It was by God’s grace alone that Israel entered the land of promise, and it is by God’s grace alone that you and I are saved. The righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ is so overwhelmingly pure, good, and great that God’s declaration of Christ’s righteousness placed upon the account of every sinner since Jesus went to the cross, reaches back to every sinner believing in the promises of God through the Messiah to come until the Carpenter of Nazareth was born, crucified, and rose from the dead. Paul said it like this in his letter to the Romans:
This was to show God’s righteousness, because in His divine forbearance He had passed over former sins. Romans 3:25
In other words, Christ’s righteousness was placed upon the accounts of those who believed by faith back then (former sins), just as we are declared righteous by virtue of Christ’s righteousness today, trusting in His person and work as complete, capable, and sufficient for every gospel promise and provision. For, as the apostle also says elsewhere,
Ye are complete in Him. Colossians 2:10, KJV.
Amen! Hallelujah! What a Savior!
A stubborn people were we all
Until declared the LORD
His righteousness on weak and small
Who trust, by faith, His Word.
