2/6 Reading Portions: Genesis 39; Mark 9; Job 5; Romans 9
Genesis 39:7
And after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, “Lie with me.”
LIED
Lustful flesh will attempt to seduce the godly; and failing that, it will cast off or cast away the godly soul with treachery, lies, and conspiracy. Potiphar’s wife desired Joseph, and when “he would not listen to her, to lie beside her or to be with her” (Gen 39:10), she lied about Joseph to her servants, and then to her husband, so that Joseph was cast into prison (Gen 39:13-19). Fleshly religion is the same way. The scribes, lawyers, Pharisees, Sadducees, elders, and chief priests tempted the Lord Jesus Christ, conspired to murder Him, made up lies about Him, and finally sent Him away to be crucified. Nothing has changed in the four thousand years since the days of Joseph or the two thousand years since the days of Christ. Those overruled by the flesh will always attempt to corrupt the godly. Paul warned Timothy, as well as us,
Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 2 Timothy 3:12
It has been happening in countries all around the world with a fever pitch. It will eventually be widespread across America. We must, like Joseph, refuse to yield to the flesh and trust in God. As God Almighty was with Joseph at Potiphar’s house and in Egypt’s prison, so will Christ Jesus be with us wherever His providence brings us. For God’s glory, may we endure and endeavor to be as Joseph: upright until the fruit is produced on the branches of the Vine, and Christ is exalted thereby.
Joseph stood firm in godliness,
Refusing master’s wife;
May we too, by God’s grace, be bless’d
When we encounter strife.
