5/3 Reading Portions: Numbers 10; Psalm 46-47; Song of Solomon 8; Hebrews 8
O you who dwell in the gardens, with companions listening for your voice; let me hear it. Song of Solomon 8:13
VOICE
In the last chapter of this book, the king’s beloved Shunamite betrothed cannot stop talking to her companions about the one who loves her (Song 8:1-7). She even repeats herself in the third and fourth verses (see Song 2:6-7) because she’s so madly in love with the king. Yet, the king hears her and tells her to speak on.
Every reputable commentator on this beloved book tells us its words are a picture of the relationship of the Lord Jesus Christ to His beloved church. We, the Lord’s blessed bride, sing the praises of Christ to anyone who would hear. In fact, our praise of Christ, and the good news of His gospel, may seem repetitive at times to some hearers (Song 2:6-7; 8:3-4). Nevertheless, the church, you and me, who walk by faith and not by sight (2 Cor 5:7), whose weapons are spiritual, not carnal (2 Cor 10:4), are so passionately in love with our Lord and Savior, we can’t help but to speak of His amazing grace, His tender mercy, and His sacrificial love. Our love for Christ exists because of His love for us (1 Jn 4:19). To Jesus, our voice is sweet and our face is lovely. Though we are great sinners, and the corruptions of flesh still remain in our mortal bodies, He sees us as pure and precious because we’ve been cleansed by His own shed blood (Eph 5:25) and continue to be washed by the water of His Word (Eph 5:26).
And when we hear His voice, saying, “Let me hear it,” we desire with greater urgency our Lord’s return, saying to Him,
“Make haste, my Beloved, and be like a gazelle or a young stag on the mountains of spices.” Song of Solomon 8:14
Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Oh, Lord, make haste to come for us,
Be a gazelle or stag;
Until You do, we’ll sing Your praise,
In You alone, we boast, we brag.
