6/6 Reading Portions: Deuteronomy 10; Psalm 94; Isaiah 38; Revelation 8
Deuteronomy 10:6
“Yet the LORD set His heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day.”
JEWELER
This verse all by itself is an amazing truth! Yet God, the great Jeweler who takes a priceless gem and couches it in settings of pure, refined gold, precedes this verse with a thought to overwhelm the soul and dazzle the mind:
“Behold, to the LORD your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it.” Deuteronomy 10:14
Absolutely everything belongs to God. He has created the splendor of this incredible planet we live on. Even in the judgment of His worldwide flood (Gen 7:20), and by its effects which created the beauty of such mountain ranges as Iliamna overlooking the Cook Inlet in Alaska, is a breathtaking display of God’s awesome majesty. The LORD God loves His creation and His handiwork, yet He looks upon the souls of sinful, fallen mankind and loves them, chose their offspring for His own possession, and granted them His heavenly favor above all peoples. The physical descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were a foreshadow of the Israel of God in Christ (Gal 6:14-16). God’s love for His people is an everlasting love (Jer 31:3) because it is rooted and grounded in His only Son, Jesus Christ (John 3:16). There is no access to heaven, no entrance into glory, and no abiding in the presence of almighty God apart from God’s amazing love in Jesus Christ. God is love (1 Jn 4:8), and we love only in response to His love for us (1 Jn 4:19). For anything that would be called “love,” if void of Christ, it is not love at all. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Since Moses pray’d for Israel
That his God would not send
The people to deserving hell—
The LORD did condescend.
So, Moses made two more great stones:
Commands exposing sin—
Salvation’s found in Christ alone
By grace, through faith, in Him.
