Matthew 8:27
And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey Him?”
FULLY
In today’s chapter, we have two back-to-back incidents recorded, the first expressing the Lord Jesus as being fully human, and the second presenting Jesus to be almighty God. In the former, a scribe came up to our Lord and stated that he would follow Jesus anywhere (Matt 8:19). Jesus replied,
“Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” Matthew 8:20
Although Jesus was eternally rich as almighty God, by His incarnation…
He became poor, so that [we] by His poverty might become rich. 2 Corinthians 8:9
From His humble birth in a manger, to being raised by poor parents, and in living throughout His earthly ministry as one who wholly relied upon the heavenly Father for every need, and led of the Holy Spirit for His every word and action, Jesus lived a life with no advantage over any other man; and He did so for our sakes. By Christ’s humbling Himself, His righteousness is imputed to every one of us who believe on Him. In the latter, Jesus rebuked the winds and the sea, calming the great storm that struck fear in the hearts of those who spent their lives on that very same sea. Although the Messiah was a Man, He never lost His divine perfections and the essence of His deity; for eternal God cannot stop being God, else He would be no God at all. Yet Christ’s being fully Man and fully God, one Person with two distinct natures, shows us that the plan of salvation required nothing less than almighty God becoming human to live the life you and I cannot possibly live. There is no other way to heaven. The Lord Jesus is the only Way, the only Truth, and He is Life eternal. Christ Jesus is Plan A in heaven’s economy and there is no Plan B. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Our Savior is eternal God,
For our sakes He was poor,
Upon the earth in human bod,
His righteous life was pure.
