Psalm 95:3
For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
KING
YHVH God is a great God and great King in the same way that He is good; just as Jesus told the rich young man,
“No one is good except God alone.” Mark 10:18
Although many kings were Messianic types, foreshadowing Christ to come, and though several of the kings in Israel and Judah loved the LORD God, they were still sinners in need of all of God’s grace. David was a covetous, lying, adulterer and murderer. Solomon was an idolater and polygamist. Hezekiah was arrogant and irresponsible. King Jesus is King above all kings, for His majesty among men exceeds the most sincere and honest efforts from the best of men. Moreover, Jesus, as eternal God and the second Person of the Trinity, is above all created things viewed by fallen men as gods. Though sinful, unbelieving men may shun the Lord Jesus Christ as King Eternal and King Supreme by worshiping rocks, wood, nature, crafted images, terra firma, celestial bodies, demonic spirits, Satan, knowledge, emotions, or even themselves, these are gods confined to their own imaginations, and are as far from the true and living God as the earth is from the sun. They are only gods insomuch as they drive the faithless further from the glories and riches of Christ; and men who worship such rob themselves of the blessings of true love, true joy, and true life. And further, their idolatry does not affect the Lord Jesus Christ in the least. Our worship of Christ, and the unbelieving sinner’s hatred toward Christ, cannot change the King of kings and Lord of lords in any way, shape, or form. He is eternal and unchanging God. He alone is good, great, and sovereign King above all things, worthy of the utmost worship and allegiance from all subjects under His dominion. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Let’s lift our hands to Christ, our King,
And bow in humble fear;
With blessed voice, may our hearts sing
Of God whose Son is dear.
