if we are faithless, He remains faithful— for He cannot deny Himself.
DENY
Sometimes, the fleshly failures of our minds oppose theological doctrine. Thus, we excuse ourselves from knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, and even accuse those who embrace such things as being proud, pharisaical, and being particularly out of touch with the common Christian and just-plain-Joe. Yet doctrinal truth has a suitable place in our spiritual growth. Our verse today presents the attributes of God in general. Jesus Christ, as very God, cannot deny Himself. God is Self-existent, Self-sufficient, and unchangeable in all His holy character. Therefore, Jesus is always consistent with who He is. For example, God does not turn off His holy wrath and justice against sin to demonstrate His grace and mercy toward sinners; He doesn’t hedge His sovereignty to promote man’s responsibility; and the eternal, all-knowing God does not, will not, cannot choose whom He will save based upon what He learns about man’s future. That would cause Him to deny Himself, making Him completely inconsistent with His unchanging character, suggesting that He is something less than absolute and almighty God. Yet grasping His perfect and unchanging nature, as God says through the apostle here, means that He remains faithful to Himself and to all His plans and purposes through the Lord Jesus Christ. Though we may have a lapse in faith, our God never changes. Though we fail Him, and others, God’s plans in Christ Jesus are never thwarted. Though the world around us seems to be flushed down the toilet and going to hell in a handbag, the Lord Jesus Christ still sits upon the throne and is sovereign over every jot and tittle of unfolding events. How do we apply this truth? By knowing His faithful character and His immutable attributes, we can then fully trust Him in all things. Though we may stumble in faithlessness time after time, our salvation in Christ, and more importantly, God’s plans and purposes until the Lord Jesus Christ returns, are the most reliable, steadfast, and trustworthy truths upon which our faith may rest. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Amen brother!
