Psalm 140:7
O LORD, my Lord, the strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in the day of battle.
WARFARE
When we engage in spiritual warfare (2 Cor 10:4) as good soldiers of Christ Jesus (2 Tim 2:3), we may immediately think of donning our spiritual armor listed in the sixth chapter of Ephesians. And well we should. Sadly, many young Christians have been taught, or simply concluded, that it is by our own effort that we do so. In this they do err. The armor, including the helmet of salvation (Eph 6:17), must be fitted in the power of…
…the Lord and the strength of His might. Ephesians 6:10
David declares likewise in this psalm. The Lord was the strength of [his] salvation and his Lord had covered [his] head in the day of battle. While certainly we’re not passive in this endeavor, it is the Lord Jesus, Himself, who is our protection in the day of battle— in the struggle of life in this evil world, and by the spiritual warfare in which we engage against the corruptions still remaining in our flesh (Gal 5:17), and against the unseen, devilish forces that surround us (Eph 6:12). Our part is to take our position at Christ’s cross. While in David’s day, it was surely before Christ’s incarnation and crucifixion, and he may not have known the wonder of the cross, even as a prophet of God. He did, however, know God’s grace; and he knew from whence his salvation came. When our meditations take us to the truth of atoning grace through Jesus Christ our Lord, that truth is a covering for our thoughts, and a protection for our supplications and intercessions. At Calvary, the victory has been won by Christ; and it is at the truth of His cross where we make our stand. It is through the truth of redemptive grace that…
…we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Romans 8:37
Indeed, the Lord Jesus has got you and me covered. Hallelujah! What a victorious Savior!
My Lord, my God, my saving strength,
You’re my true salvation;
My head You’ve cover’d for the war,
At the cross I my armor don.
