Psalm 62:6
He only is my Rock and my Salvation, my Fortress; I shall not be shaken.
EXPERIENCE
David’s experiences, with his fleeing from the hand of Saul, present vivid pictures from his poetic pen. He hid from his enemy in the rocks and in caves, but his hilly fortress of defense could not compare with his blessed Savior, YHVH God, who was his true Rock. Though he waited in silence for God alone (Psa 62:1), and God alone was his Rock, he believed he would not be greatly moved or shaken (Psa 62:2). The more he hid because of his calamitous circumstances, the more firmly established was his faith in God (Psa 62:6); and he knew of a certainty that he could not be shaken. Just like David, we encounter trials and tribulations in life. Like David, whose soul waited in silence for God alone (Psa 62:1, 5a), our sufferings and tribulations produce patience (Rom 5:3). As we patiently endure, this patience produces experience; and experience, hope (Rom 5:4), just as David sings,
…for my hope is from Him. Psalm 62:5b
Have we ever been shaken in faith? Fearful of men? Doubting God’s promises? Hesitant at all in our trust of God in Christ? Of course we have. Why is that? Our souls have given place to something else besides the Lord Jesus Christ— that is, we’ve added to Jesus in our faith; and by implication, if Christ alone isn’t sufficient for our faith, our faith is weak at best, or worthless at worst. Jesus is all-sufficient as our Rock and Defense and needs no help or partners. The Lord Jesus is almighty, and we must take refuge in Him alone. Christ also exhorts us through David,
Trust in Him at all times, O people; Psalm 64:8
When we add anything to our Rock, implying He is weak, we are not trusting Him at all times; and our faith will then be shaken.
The Lord alone, He is my Rock,
My Refuge and Defense;
If something else must help my walk,
My faith is just pretense.
