9/15 Reading Portions: 2 Samuel 11; 2 Corinthians 4; Ezekiel 18; Psalms 62-63
Psalm 63:1
O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh faints for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
YOU
Today’s readings present two extreme aspects of David’s life. In 2 Samuel 11, we read of David’s lust for Bathsheba and the murder of her husband after she became pregnant. In today’s portion, from the first verse of the sixty-third psalm, David’s love for God is a thirst that can only be quenched by the joy of God’s presence. We read of David’s repentance just six days ago, after Nathan the prophet confronted the king, as David penned,
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Psalm 51:12
Whether it is sin, as in David’s situation with Bathsheba, or whether it is from David fleeing to the Judean wilderness because his son had usurped his throne, as in today’s psalm, there is only one thing that can satisfy the depravity and dryness of our spiritual condition— God alone; and specifically, for us, the Lord Jesus Christ. For those saved by grace, though we may backslide, though we may fail, though we may suffer the consequences of behavior manifested as a false witness of salvation before our court or children, inside the clay jars of our human condition we have the treasure of the gospel of Christ that, through the indwelling Holy Spirit, awakens us to our lack and empowers us (2 Cor 4:7) so that we may cry out uniquely, and genuinely unto Christ,
“YOU are my God! earnestly I seek YOU! my soul thirsts for YOU! my flesh faints for YOU!”
Only Christ Jesus can satisfy what’s missing, succor the shame of our misdeeds, and securely keep us through the cleansing power of His merciful blood. Truly, the Lord Jesus Messiah is the Door for the sheep (John 10:7), the only entrance for reconciliation to our sheeply wanderings. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
You, Lord Jesus, are my God,
It’s You alone I seek;
I thirst for You on earthly sod
Because my flesh is weak.
