Revelation 3:5
“The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments...”
IMPUTATION
Truly, the reward of salvation is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. His person and presence are what makes heaven heavenly. To know Him, to love Him, to serve Him, to praise Him, to worship Him, to be transformed by Him, to testify of Him, and to have fellowship with Him are the greatest blessings in all the universe for all eternity. You may have noticed Christ’s promises to the one who conquers (overcometh, KJV) are graces which accompany salvation. The rewards for overcomers are blessings already promised to God’s children elsewhere in Scripture. The Lord Jesus, however, clarifies these graces to the seven churches, as well as to each one of His saintly redeemed, for He says,
“He who has an ear, let him hear…” Revelation 3:6
Perhaps, you may have also noticed that each of Christ’s rewards are graces which enhance our relationship with Christ, viz., we gain more knowledge of Him― to love Jesus more passionately, to serve Jesus more righteously, to praise Jesus more expressively, to worship Jesus more reverently, to honor Jesus more thoroughly, to proclaim Jesus more preciously, and to enjoy Jesus more intimately. Every saint possesses these graces at salvation; nevertheless, the saint maturing in grace and faith must respond to the Spirit’s promptings and persevere, by God’s grace in the strength of Christ, to conquer the flesh, the world, and Satan in our lives. One of these graces is to be clothed thus in white garments. This is Christ’s imputed righteousness. Most of the folks in Sardis had “soiled their garments,” whereas a few had not (Rev 3:4). When the eternal presence of Christ speaks to us through “the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars” (Rev 3:1), illuminating His grace, His mercy, and His majesty to our souls, as we persevere to know Jesus, love Jesus, and serve Jesus, His righteousness shines brilliantly upon us, like those luminescent garments, so that we truly become “the light of the world” (Matt 5:14), and “are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Rom 8:37). Hallelujah! What a Savior!
The one who conquers will be clothed
With righteousness of Christ;
To serve in truth the One we know,
The Son who paid sin’s price.
