6/4 Reading Portions: Deuteronomy 8; Psalm 91; Isaiah 36; Revelation 6
Psalm 91:4
He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you will find refuge;
PIGEON
Upon this portion of the verse, Mr. Spurgeon commented:
“Had it been invented by an uninspired man it would have verged upon blasphemy, for who should dare to apply such words to the Infinite Jehovah?” C. H. Spurgeon, The Treasury of David, Volume IV
Yet he also notes the blessing of the Lord’s approval as inspired text, that the Lord… “authorised yea, dictated the language,”1 and thus, making this one of the most blessed expressions in the psalms. Such humility from our almighty and infinite God, to describe Himself as a bird!
He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust. KJV
The use of the words will, shall, and shalt speak of its future fulfillment in the Lord Jesus Christ. Such humble grace is seen as the Lord Jesus wept over Jerusalem:
“How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!” Luke 13:34
Though John the Baptist declared Jesus the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29), through this psalm the Lord likens His sacrifice to that of a pigeon or a turtledove. Why? His was the sacrifice for the poor who couldn’t afford a lamb (Lev 5:7). In the blessed sacrifice of Christ, we are protected (cover you) with the feathers of His humble grace (His pinions). Moreover, by the ingenious design of our Creator and Savior, the wing which lifts a bird to soar to amazing heights reflects Christ’s atoning work (under His wings). Under our Lord’s wings is where we find hope, refuge, and confident trust. Jesus preached,
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3
Amen! Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Under Christ’s wings, we find refuge,
His feather’s do protect;
His faithful promise is our food:
Remember and reflect.
