Psalm 48:9
We have thought on Your steadfast love, O God...
MERCY
The godly man or woman is one of deep thought. The Hebrew root from which “thought” is translated, דָּמָה (da-MAH), means “to consider” in resemblance or similitude. In other words, we must ponder God’s steadfast love in the way He thinks about it. Surely, as Mr. Spurgeon had written years ago, the godly man or woman does…
“not suffer God’s wonders to pass before their eyes and melt into forgetfulness, but they meditate deeply upon them.” —C. H. Spurgeon, The Treasury of David
God’s steadfast love, His חֵסֵד (CHĀ-sād), Hebrew “mercy” (translated ‘lovingkindness’ in the KJV), is worth our sincerest thought and continual meditation. God has graced mankind with many mercies, but the most excellent and supreme is found in the person and work of His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Mercy was withheld from Him when He hung upon the cross so that mercy may be lavished upon all those who believe. He, who knew the heavenly Father’s tender mercies, good pleasure, and eternal love more intimately than any man, suffered God’s holy, eternal, and infinite wrath more than any man will suffer in hell’s eternal condemnation. A day should never pass that the conscious thought of Christ’s atoning sacrifice be considered in our minds. I’m glad the English Standard Version many times translates the Hebrew word for mercy as steadfast love. Because of the corruptions of our flesh still remaining, we may tend to pervert the truth of God’s love and distort the unchangeableness of God’s attributes. Because God’s mercy is displayed in the sufferings and death of His only Son, His love must always be viewed steadfastly through the Lord Jesus Christ’s person and atoning sacrifice. Hallelujah! What a thought-worthy Savior!
Every thought of You, Lord Jesus,
Strengthens us to praise Your name;
You have done all that God pleases,
And by the cross You’ve brought Your Father fame.
