“Hear this, O Job; stop and consider the wondrous works of God.” Job 37:14

STOP

As we know, Job did not sin with his lips at the first; and his theology was intact, unlike the theology of his ill-comforters, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar (Job 42:7). Elihu, on the other hand, is a prophetic type of Jesus Christ from this poetic writing. His name means “He is my God” and his father’s name, Barachel, means “blessed God.” We may properly translate the second verse of chapter thirty-two to read, “He is my God, the son of blessed God.” Like Jesus Christ, who is eternally and infinitely God the Son, Elihu was with the four men, although never mentioned until the bad theology of Job’s friends had run its course and Job’s complaints to justify himself had ended. Moreover, when God rebuked Job’s three friends in the end, and told them to seek Job’s prayers on their behalf, God never rebuked Elihu (Job 42:8). Elihu’s words here in our verse today sound very much like those of God in the next few chapters. Again, this is a prophetic foreshadow of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus said,

“The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own authority, but the Father who dwells in Me does His works.” John 14:10

Christ Jesus spoke the words of the Father and His voice resounded upon earth with all the harmonies of heaven. Elihu’s words are powerful and should be heeded in the context of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We must stop daily and consider the wondrous works of God. Jesus spoke of them. Jesus did them. Jesus died to bring them to pass for you and me to have life from them. As we see Christ with the eyes of faith, we must also hear His voice with faithful ears. Stop. Listen to Christ; and rejoice in His Father’s wondrous works— the most wondrous being His Son’s atoning death upon Calvary’s tree.

Hear this, children; stop, consider
All the Father’s wondrous works;
Our Lord’s words flow like a river,
With ears of faith, let’s be alert.
