Psalm 40:2
He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
DESTINED
In the first verse, the sweet psalmist of Israel declares that God heard his cry as he waited patiently for Him. Why? He answers himself in the second verse. We who have been saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus have been drawn up from the pit of destruction. The Lord Jesus tells us through Paul,
For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:9
Our sins against a holy God warrant the wrath of God as punishment: eternal punishment because the penalty is measured by virtue of the One to whom our sins offended— an eternal God. Yet God sent His one and only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. He suffered the unabated, unbridled, and unequaled wrath of God for your sins and mine while He hung upon Calvary’s tree. He did this as holy, perfect, and sinless Man. To do so, Jesus, who was, is, and evermore shall be eternal God, left His heavenly glory to walk as a Man in the miry bog of a world turned upside down by the sin of Adam’s disobedience, a world wholly depraved by the sins of Adam’s descendants. The Treasure of heaven lived as a Man in the cesspool of man’s sinful filth, and moreover, was destroyed by God’s infinite and eternal wrath when He was nailed to a Roman cross and lifted up between heaven and earth. Faithfully trusting in Christ’s sacrifice for sins has drawn us up from the pit of God’s wrath, has empowered us to resist the miry bog of temptation and sin, and has set our feet upon Jesus, our Rock, so that our faithful walk is secure in the gospel of peace every step of the way. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
I sank in sin and had a debt
To God I could not pay;
And Jesus suffer’d wrath and death,
Salvation’s only Way.
