Psalm 100:3, KJV
…it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves;
CREATOR
Our flesh has an overwhelming tendency to boast in human achievement. It is the disposition of our fallen condition since Adam’s foolish disobedience in Eden’s Garden. Though I was slight of frame growing up, when I sprouted after I joined the Navy, I was a rascal when it came to physical accomplishment; and sad to say, it still rises up in my flesh since the Lord has saved me. What have we to boast in? Has not the sovereign LORD given us those physical attributes to not only walk or run, but to have our very being? Of course He has. Some of us boast in physical achievements— some in intellectual conquests; some in business, announcing how they were “self-made”; some will even do so when it comes to spiritual matters (of which I have repented often). Yet this small portion of the psalm may be expressed in another way:
Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:31
Our worship of God, while it may contain a “joyful noise” (Psa 100:1) with “gladness” and “singing” (Psa 100:2), it should also be reasonable, thoughtful, and intelligent, knowing “that the LORD, He is God” (Psa 100:3a), and that He is our almighty and sovereign Creator (Psa 100:3b). In true, spiritual worship of our God in Christ, our applause for Him need not be audible; it can be but doesn’t need to be. It must be, however, held by faith in the depths of our souls. Moreover, if we harbor any boastful notion of human achievement, whether for ourselves or for another, even if it was never vocalized or displayed outwardly, it must surely be repented of with godly sorrow. But thanks ever and always be to our precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed for our forgiveness, as it is written:
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
Hallelujah! What a Savior!
“Know that the LORD is God indeed;
Without our aid He did us make:
We are His flock, He doth us feed,
And for His sheep He doth us take.”
Scottish Psalter (1656)
