Psalm 35:27
Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, “Great is the LORD, who delights in the welfare of His servant!”
DELIGHT
While this verse also shouts prophetically of our Lord Jesus Christ, let us meditate today upon its application to and for God’s people. Your righteousness and mine first comes from the fact that we have been saved by God’s grace. The prophet of old says that…
…all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. Isaiah 64:6
Since we’ve been saved by God in Christ, there are still enough corruptions in our mortal flesh that the best of our righteous deeds, words, and thoughts are soiled and unholy, thus requiring all of God’s grace to be acceptable before Him. Your righteousness and mine is the imputed righteousness of Christ— that is, His righteousness has been placed upon our account in the eyes of God, through the grace and mercy of God in Christ alone. Surely, as we grow in grace and are strengthened in faith, our deeds, words, and thoughts are holier today than they were yesterday. Nevertheless, it is Christ’s presence with us, the Spirit’s presence in us, and the love of the Father upon us, that shines in you and me; and by God’s grace, it is also manifested by you and me. This should delight us because our Tri-une God is glorified through us in these eternal workings which He has ordained before the world was. Our prayer should then be: Let those who delight in my righteousness, that is, in Christ’s righteousness placed upon my account by grace, shout for joy and be glad. This is akin to praying,
“Your kingdom come. Your will be done.” Matthew 6:10
Heavenly Father, let those who delight in Your grace shout for joy and be glad. This includes me, Lord. May I shout for joy and be glad when you show me Christ’s imputed righteousness in others, wherein I might delight!
I shout for joy and I am glad
To see God’s grace in you:
Delighting in Christ’s work you have
And hold in all you do.
