And He said to them, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?”
GOSPEL
Christ’s gospel is so multifaceted and comprehensive that eternity for the glorified saint after Jesus returns will be filled with joyful discovery of who Christ Jesus is and what He has done through His incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection, ascension, and return. We only have the space on the page and the time this morning to concentrate on one element from this event. First, let us consider how wonderfully deep and thorough is Christ’s healing gospel. In the synagogue was a man with dropsy. Dropsy was an old term for someone with edema, a swelling of the body by some other underlying issue. That’s what the Christ and His gospel does. He doesn’t just heal the symptoms. He heals the underlying cause. That’s called regeneration, dear ones. He has given us a new heart and new spirit (Ezek 36:26-27), making you and me new creations in Him (2 Cor 5:17). A blessed friend of mine and his wife, Bill and Lynn Sasser, used to sing this wonderful song, “Deeper that the Stain Has Gone.” That’s what Jesus has done. Sin has infected every area of our lives, but Jesus cleanses deeper than the stain has gone. Every healing Jesus did on earth was more than a mere corroboration of His ministry as the Messiah; it was a testimony of His gospel grace. The dead were raised because we were dead in sins and trespasses (Eph 2:1). The blind received their sight because sinners cannot see God (Matt 5:8). The deaf received hearing because sinners cannot hear the gospel without Christ’s divine intervention (Rom 10:17). The lame were lifted to walk because sinners could not walk before God in faith (Gen 17:1). The mute had their tongues loosened because sinners cannot speak the truth apart from a touch from Christ (Isa 6:5-7). And so on. Every miracle testified of Christ’s eternal power to save through His precious gospel. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
“Praise the Lord for full salvation!
God still reigns upon His throne.
And I know the Blood still reaches
Deeper than the stain has gone.”
