Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors. Psalm 119:24
COUNSELORS
Psalm 119, an acrostic psalm, is basically about the Word of God— His law (v1), His testimonies (v2), His ways (v3), His precepts (v4), His statutes (v5), His commandments (v6), His righteous judgments (v7, KJV), etc. The Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Word (John 1:1), as well as the living Word (John 1:14), the crucified Word (John 1:12), and the resurrected Word (John 1:4). Jesus Christ alone is the perfect Fulfiller of God’s law (Matt 5:17-18), the only Way of God (John 14:6), the faithful Executor of God’s statutes (John 8:29), and the true Herald of God’s righteous judgments (John 8:26). Moreover, Jesus Christ is the Testimony of God because every testimony contained in God’s glorious Word speaks of Jesus Christ (John 5:39).
Jesus Christ delighted in who He was as the fulfillment of God’s Word (Psa 40:7-8). We should also delight in that truth. Every written testimony in God’s Word (and all speak of Jesus Messiah in some way, shape, or form) is a delight to us when we are attentive to God’s Spirit, hearing from the Father, and joined as one with the Son. Moreover, the testimonies of Jesus Christ from God’s holy Word are our counselors. First, they give us insight into the person and work of Christ; and this must be first and foremost in our understanding from Scripture. If the counsel given and insights gained from Scripture do not exalt the Lord Jesus Christ first, then we will have a tendency, time after time, to exalt the work and intellect of men; we will be prone to exalt, or at least emphasize, the work of the flesh, rather than humbly submitting by faith unto Christ in all things. If Jesus is exalted, whether by preacher, teacher, or even a babe in Christ, and the first thought in mind or first word from our mouth is, “Yeah, but…”, we’ve got an issue in the flesh; and that issue must be crucified (Col 3:5).
My comfort, and my heart’s delight,
Thy testimonies be;
And they, in all my doubts and fears,
Are counsellors to me.
Scottish Psalter, 1650
