And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. 1 Kings 19:12
WHISPER
As all things were created in order to model and exemplify Jesus Christ and His gospel, the elements of nature often appear in the Scriptures to present the blessed and glorious truths of the gospel as well. Certainly, the wind of the Holy Spirit (John 3:8) must sometimes blow like a tempest to effectually carry the gospel to the soul; yet, the person of Christ is not in the wind. The conviction of sin (John 16:9) will often shake a soul to the core like an earthquake; however, Jesus Himself is not in the earthquake. The fire of judgment must bring a soul to the depths of godly sorrow which works repentance unto salvation (2 Cor 7:10); nevertheless, the Lord Jesus is not in the fire. The person of Jesus Christ comes to us in a whisper. He is meek and lowly in heart (Matt 11:28). Full of grace, Jesus is humble in His obedience (Phil 2:8). By His still, small voice, He supplies God’s mercy (Heb 4:15), which brings us peace with God (Rom 5:1); and therefore, we may approach the throne of grace with confidence (Heb 4:16). The whisper of Christ’s gospel voice is “merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin” (Exo 34:6-7a). Nevertheless, Christ’s voice, though a whisper which descends from His exalted throne on high, is not void of power. One day, Christ’s still, small voice “will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation” (Exo 34:7b). Hallelujah! What a Savior!
The voice of Christ, a whisper small,
And full of gospel grace—
And lavished on we sinners all,
As those who seek Christ’s face.
