10/19 Reading Portions: 1 Kings 22; 1 Thessalonians 5; Daniel 4; Psalms 108-109
Psalm 108:13
With God we shall do valiantly; it is He who will tread down our foes.
VALIANT
Why should we not be valiant? If we approach every endeavor with God in Christ, the Lord’s presence gives us courage. As surely as we walk by faith (2 Cor 5:7), we are also to fight by faith (2 Cor 10:4-5; Eph 6:12). Our valiant efforts to overcome temptation, to subdue the lusts of the flesh, and to shun sin and works of wickedness is more than merely receiving the Lord’s help. The second part of the verse tells us so: it is He who will tread down our foes. The Lord Jesus said as much:
“I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
Our valiant behavior and acts of righteousness comes from the gospel truth in the center of our souls because Jesus has saved us by His grace. By faith, we recognize the Lord Jesus has kept His promise, as He will never leave us nor forsake us (Heb 13:5). The Christ of God is very God. He is with us, and we are with Him. Therefore, with God we shall do valiantly. Without Christ, we can do nothing. Apart from Him, we are nothing; because branches separated from the vine are nothing more than kindling for the fire. We were weak, ungodly sinners (Rom 5:6, 8) and enemies of God (Rom 5:10) when Christ tread down Satan by His death upon the cross. And though we don our spiritual armor (Eph 6:13-17), it is still the Lord Jesus Christ who treads down the principalities and powers of the unseen realm. If we lose heart, lack courage, or fail to do valiantly in our Christian walk, it is because our faith has wavered in the truth of Christ’s eternal presence— secured for us by His atoning sacrifice, powerful resurrection, and glorious ascension. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
With God we will do valiantly;
Our enemies He treads down;
Trust in Him and then you will see
Great courage will be found.
