Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God,
and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain.
CALVARY
Moses is, as the prophets are many times in Scripture, a type of Jesus Christ. As Moses led the people of God to meet with God and hear from God at the foot of the mountain, so Jesus Christ leads us to meet with God so we may hear from God at the foot of Mount Calvary. Surely, this occurs daily as we rise to meet with our Lord as individuals in prayer and devotions. Nevertheless, we must readily see how we are to be powerfully led by Christ to hear from God thunder the truth of Christ crucified from heaven when we gather as a congregation at the foot of the mount.
The people were to be consecrated by Moses, preparing for three days to meet with God. Likewise, as we have been consecrated by Christ, we should also prepare to meet with God each week at the foot of Calvary’s mount. Because of the corruption of fallen flesh remaining in our mortal bodies, we tend to treat our weekly gathering with casual indifference at times. We have not prepared to meet with God or hear from Him words for our exhortation and edification. As a result, the worship of God becomes a last-minute pursuit rather than an anticipated and prepared-for time of sanctification. Rather than putting on the Lord Jesus Christ, preparing our garments in prayer ahead of time (Ex 19:10), we wonder what we will wear on the day we will meet with the Almighty. When we gather, our hearing often becomes dull to the glorious truths of Christ crucified, risen, ascended, and coming again. Our weekly giving becomes an afterthought rather than a cheerful act of worship given from the heart, which should have been prepared days in advance (2 Cor 9:5-7). Today, let us prepare to follow Christ to Calvary, the mountain of God, to hear His words thunder to us from heaven. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Each week the Lord doth lead us to
The mount of God to hear
The thunder of Christ crucified
In truth and godly fear.
