Genesis 1:4
And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.
LIGHT
There are many a dear Christian who have read the first part this verse having a thought toward God being surprised by how good the light was. God forbid! The light of creation was merely a reflection of our triune God, as it is written:
God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:7
Yet we also know that He makes this statement to prophetically point to the Lord Jesus Messiah, who is the Light of the world (John 8:12). How could it not be so? The Lord Jesus is God the Son, and He is the utmost delight to Father God. Indeed, the Lord Jesus is good. It is true as it pertains to our regeneration in His saving our souls. We may acknowledge that the Lord Jesus is the Light of the world. Even Satan may acquiesce to the fact that the Lord Jesus said it during His earthly ministry. But for those being saved by God’s grace, when we have been graced with the gift of faith from above, we will see the light of Christ, worshiping Him as good. As it is written:
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17
Moreover, in the conversion of our souls, when God’s salvation in Christ makes us new creations in Christ (2 Cor 5:17), it changes us so that there is a distinction between light and darkness, between good and evil, between Christ and antichrist. We may not always recognize it, or discern such in our growth by God’s grace, but it is there. For God Himself makes the distinction, and He also is the one who separates light from darkness. We must lean wholly upon Christ so we may choose His will for us, not our will in His name. We must keep in mind that…
…even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 2 Corinthians 11:14
This is why we must submit to God in Christ in all things. We will not always see the distinction between light and darkness, and we will never have the power to separate the two because of the corruptions remaining in our mortal flesh. Its separation is a work of the Holy Spirit (John 14:12; 16:13). God alone sees the heart of men (1 Sam 16:7; Acts 15:8), and we must trust God so we may respond in love toward Him, and so we may act in this world to glorify Christ before men. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
